Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark Grant Awarded by The Healthcare Foundation of NJ
(Newark, NJ – January 23, 2024) Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark (HFHGN) has been awarded $96,000 from The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey. This grant is designed to build the capacity of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark’s West and Central Village Community Resource Hub to increase hunger relief efforts and health education and screenings benefiting neighborhood residents. “We are truly grateful to The Healthcare Foundation of NJ for this transformational grant that will help us change the lives of the residents of Newark.” said Jeffrey Farrell, Chief Executive Officer of HFHGN.
HFHGN’s Food Pantry was opened in 2020 as a call to action during the pandemic and continues to provide nutritious meals to the area residents addressing rising food insecurity rates and serves nearly 5,000 residents yearly, with the need rising as the cost for food increases. The statistics surrounding food insecurity for children in Newark show that one in five children live in poverty and households are food insecure. With food prices for home consumption up as much as 10% since 2022, we are responding to the most vulnerable families by expanding our food pantry.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark’s mission is to provide decent, affordable housing in partnership with low and moderate-income families, and together work to revitalize communities in Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties. HFHGN has worked over the past 35+ years to create a sustainable supply of more affordable housing and critical repairs for neighborhood residents, seniors and veterans who cannot afford to maintain their homes.
