Habitat of Greater Newark was proud to partner with Montclair Kimberley Academy (MKA) on Saturday, March 3, as students helped to hang sheetrock at Harmony Point.
As a part of the Montclair-based private school’s community and service learning initiative, MKA offers numerous opportunities for students to become more engaged, helping others. Habitat of Greater Newark is the ideal fit for this educational program.
“MKA had a great time working at Harmony Point,” said Jean Jones, MKA Advisor and Upper School Math teacher. “Despite the bitter cold and high winds, we were all warmed by the group effort and the knowledge that together we were making a difference in the lives of others.”
She added: “Part of the MKA mission statement is that students have ‘personal engagement with the world’ and ‘live an honorable and generous life.’ We are grateful to Habitat of Greater Newark for providing us the guidance and support necessary to help us reach our goal.”
A longtime partner of Habitat, MKA rewards students who complete more than 100 hours of service with its Presidential Volunteer Service Award. At MKA, students are encouraged to reflect on how volunteering can teach them more about themselves and their impact on the world.
Moreover, working together to build quality housing for people with lower incomes helps identify personal strengths that these students can share with others, as part of a lifetime of responding to needs locally and globally.
