For more than 30 years, our Habitat affiliate has been committed to helping residents throughout Essex County achieve the American dream of homeownership.
Last fall, our Habitat affiliate nearly doubled its service area by taking over the role of the former Greater Elizabeth affiliate in Union County. Since then, we have grown again by acquiring the Habitat for Humanity of Hudson County affiliate, and now we are proud to serve families in Essex, Hudson and Union counties.
With this acquisition, we are pleased to announce our affiliate has officially changed its name to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark serving Essex, Hudson and Union Counties, reflecting our commitment to serve the most populated areas of the state.
Habitat of Greater Newark will work within every municipality in Essex, Hudson and Union (with the exception of Fanwood, Plainfield, and Scotch Plains which are served by another Habitat affiliate).
“Habitat of Greater Newark is in a unique position to provide diverse services to families in need and potential homeowners who can benefit from our programs,” said Jeffrey J. Farrell, CEO of Habitat of Greater Newark. “We are no longer just about building homes. We are about helping to stabilize neighborhoods, whether through our critical repairs program, neighborhood revitalization or community cleanup, with our many corporate and nonprofit partners. We are very excited about this next chapter in our service to the community.”
The Habitat of Greater Newark territory has increased from 790,000 residents to more than 2 million, making Habitat of Greater Newark the critical force in the affordable-housing arena.
“This opportunity comes with great responsibility,” Farrell said. “Working closely with our community partners and generous funders, we look forward to maximizing our resources and partnerships to foster drastic improvements in communities throughout northern New Jersey. We are honored. We are humbled. And we are ready to get to work.”
