Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark and Warrick Dunn Charities recently presented a home to a well-deserving family just in time for the cold brunt of winter.
Beatrice McKay, a single mother from Liberia, and her two children, thought they were just stopping by to sign some paperwork for their Habitat home in the South Ward.
Upon arrival, they were overwhelmed to learn they had been handpicked by Warrick Dunn Charities as a part of the Homes for the Holidays program, which provides first-time homebuyers with home furnishings, appliances, food and a $5,000 check towards their mortgage payment.
The McKay home was the 150th home furnished by Warrick Dunn Charities.
Together, Habitat of Greater Newark CEO Jeffrey J. Farrell, former NFL star Warrick Dunn and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell welcomed the McKay’s to their new home with warm remarks.
“We’re so happy to have partnered with Warrick Dunn Charities to make this possible,” Farrell said. “Beatrice and her family have endured many obstacles and we are honored to present them with a place they can call home.”
“I have a home, my kids have a place to be happy and I will never forget it,” Beatrice expressed. “A new chapter has opened for me and my family and I am very grateful”.
The McKay home is one of nine units in Phase I of Habitat’s Harmony Point project in Newark.
