“A Better Place for My Children”

Born in Belleville, New Jersey, Sylvia moved with her parents to spend most of her youth and school years in Puerto Rico. The single mom returned to New Jersey with her three children to begin their new lives in a small apartment in Newark.

Sylvia learned of Habitat Newark through a friend, but her initial application for homeownership was unsuccessful. Yet, Sylvia strengthened her qualifications and demonstrated her willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity Newark finally resulting in her selection to become a Family Partner.

Sylvia says that she’s “excited to own” her new home. She views it as “a better place for her children” than an apartment in Newark. She thanks the entire Habitat community which has been “very wonderful” helping her fulfill her dream of a home for her very close-knit family.
