Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark
Homeownership Program
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark provides a hand up, not a hand out, to hard-working families with low incomes who are willing to partner with us as homeowners. The homeownership program is a partnership between families, volunteers and donors working together to improve the living conditions of families in Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties. Habitat homes are affordable due to low interest mortgages, volunteer labor, and community support.
Habitat Partner Families are carefully selected to ensure that they are well-prepared and qualified for homeownership. The selection process, building of the home, and sweat equity can take up to 24 months. Learn more about Habitat’s homeownership program.
Critical Repair and Healthy Homes Initiative
Habitat of Greater Newark also works to repair the homes of senior, veteran, and low-income homeowners through the Critical Repair and Healthy Homes Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to identify and fix barriers to safe and healthy living conditions by providing rehabilitation, home repairs and home preservation. Through repairs such as mold and asbestos remediation, energy-conserving improvements, and the addition of aging-in-place functionality, Habitat of Greater Newark works to keep low income families, seniors, and veterans in the homes they already own.
Neighborhood Revitalization
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark also works within the West & Central Village of Newark to address broader neighborhood issues such as: aging homes in need of critical repair, unchecked crime, lack of access to healthy food, and a lack of recreational amenities for children. Habitat of Greater Newark collaborates with community stakeholders, taking action to realize the neighborhood’s full potential and capabilities by nurturing ongoing civic engagement and finding resident driven solutions in order to establish a sustainable, healthy community.
Veterans' Initiative
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) considers about 1.4 million veterans at risk for homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing. In appreciation of their service, Habitat of Greater Newark created the Veterans Initiative to support our local veterans by providing critical repairs to existing homes and by helping families achieve first-time homeownership.
Your support—just $20 or any amount you can afford—helps a Northern New Jersey family build a decent place to call home.
